Survival of the fittest as the world teaches or survival of the faithful as the Bible commends?

We are constantly bombarded in the media - print, audio or video - that in this world it is the survival of the "fittest".  I suppose they meant health, wealth and social status.  Are we unwittingly being convinced by this message?  

Whilst there is nothing wrong being healthy, wealthy and high in status in the marketplace if God has indeed bless you with them, it would be dreadfully wrong if such "achievements" were obtained in the expense of others.

May I offer a fresh insight into the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10 : 25 - 37)

The Jewish priest and the Levite that saw and ignored the half-dead man lying on the road gained time (they would have been delayed if they helped) and gained their correct "status" (they would be ceremonially uncleaned if the injured man was dead!).  Their "gain" was certainly in the expense of the injured man.  They probably felt that the fittest must survive, leaving the wounded to tend to themselves.

The Samaritan (whom the Jews disliked because they were half Jew), on the other hand, "lost time" and "lost money" to help the injured man.  However, God was watching and commended that the Samaritan who "loved his neighbour and had mercy on him."  Here, the faithful rules!

Believe you me that there will be more "wounded people" around us.  They need our help.  Are you willing to "lose time" and "lose money" to render help to those who need it most?  Will you be faithful to extend mercy to them just as God commanded us to?  I am sure you will.
